Top 10 Concept Cars
What exactly are concept cars? We’ve all seen pictures of these crazy vehicles, but never see them on the road, so what’s the point of them? Concept cars are simply made to showcase new technology and designs to gauge how receptive the public will be to these new, and sometimes, outlandish, ideas.
Today we’ll review the top 10 concept cars, based on visuals, functionality, and technology.
1) Alpine Alpenglow
The Alpine Alpenglow was designed in 2023 for both the road and the track. Alpine wanted to keep sustainability in mind with this futuristic-looking car, so they mainly focused on its aerodynamics. Another major sustainability factor about this car is that it’s a hydrogen-fueled car and only emits steam from its tailpipes. It has a classic, over-the-top, concept car look, sparking interest in anyone who sees it.
2) Ford Pro Electric SuperVan
The Ford Pro Electric SuperVan (designed in 2022) is number two on the list because it has 1,972 horsepower, it can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in 2 seconds, and it’s a freaking VAN! How cool is that?? It has a sleek futuristic look, accompanied by four electric motors and a 50 kWh battery.
3) BMW iVision Dee
The iVision Dee, born in 2023 from the brains at BMW, brings an entirely new feature to the table: it changes colors! That would definitely be useful in a car chase. Each panel of the car can change colors, simply from the user selecting whatever pattern they want from an app on their phone. You can view a brief video of the car’s color-changing capabilities here.
4) Citroen Oli
The Citroen Oli was designed in 2023 to be one of the most sustainable cars out there. It’s fully electric and was made as light as possible by using a type of cardboard for the roof and hood. This cardboard is stronger than steel, yet allows the car to remain extremely light (2,205 pounds!) and save electricity. The engineers kept sustainability in mind when designing every single aspect of this amazing vehicle!
5) Ford Nucleon
Next up, we’re going to jump back in time to 1958 to visit the Ford Nucleon! This futuristic-looking car was supposed to be powered by a small nuclear reactor, although that would’ve caused the car to weigh 36 tons. However, Ford’s goal was for the car to go about 5,000 miles in between fueling stops, which would have been very impressive. Unfortunately, to power a car using a nuclear reactor back then wasn’t possible and still isn’t today, but it doesn’t hurt to dream!
6) Lamborghini Terzo Millennio
The Terzo Millennio was a collaboration between Lamborghini and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2017. This car is also electric, however, Lamborghini aimed to develop a supercapacitor to replace the traditional battery. The body panels of the car utilize nanomaterial technology that act as electrical storage devices, while also reducing weight. While this car is definitely more futuristic than functioning, these ideas are nevertheless in development.
7) Cadillac InnerSpace
The Cadillac InnerSpace was designed in 2022 and is another electric concept car to add to our ever-growing list. The InnerSpace is a self-driving car with a panoramic screen in place of a steering wheel. There are also three different theme options for the passengers to enjoy while they relax during the ride: AR engagement, entertainment, and recovery.
8) GFG Style Kangaroo
The GFG Style Kangaroo was crafted in 2019 and it has an AWESOME name! The Kangaroo?? I love it! Most of the car is made of carbon fiber which contributes to that lightweight feature everyone loves. The maker of this vehicle wanted to combine a sports car with an off-roader and he did just that! The speedy car is fitted with tracks for snow and ice and rides higher than regular sports cars.
9) Volkswagen ID. Buggy
The Volkswagen ID. Buggy, also made in 2019, is a concept car that could potentially become a real thing, unlike many other concept vehicles. This car encompasses the classic looks of the dune buggies from the 60s but is now a reimagined zero-emissions concept car. It’s perfect for any use, from driving along the beach to cruising through the city.
10) Rolls-Royce 103EX
The 103EX, designed by Rolls-Royce in 2016, concludes our list of the top 10 concept cars. The 103EX is insanely ugly but in an awesome way. This is another autonomous vehicle, with only a couch inside overlooking a panoramic skylight. Talk about comfort!
